The goddess within.

He saw things in her that no other man had seen before and that made her realize that things were getting too real. She wasn’t ready for him. Or for anything like Brian in her life. They were truly all wrong for each other. She’d let this go on for too long because she was wildly attracted to him and had wanted to believe he wasn’t the kind of guy to get serious with her.

But the emotions he stirred in her were strong and she wanted to believe—hell, she could see on his face that the feelings went both ways.

“I’m not a goddess,” she said. “I’m just a woman who is doing my best to get along. That’s really all any of us can ask, right?”

He pulled her into his arms, the expression on his face so intense that she shivered. “Yes, it is. But there is more to you than that. You know it and I think you don’t want me to know it. Why is that?”

She pulled away from him, shivering at the cold and yet at the same time hardening her emotions to what she had to do. She had to end this. On this night when she felt so many things. The highs and the lows of her life were centered now on this one man who’d come to mean more to her than she’d ever believed possible.

Which meant she had to cut him out of her life before he left her. There were a lot of barriers between them and they hadn’t mattered as much earlier.

She had to do it now before...before he did it and it hurt so much more deeply. And, as selfish as it might be, she wanted to be the one to walk away so she could at least feel like she’d saved a bit of her soul.

“What you are seeing is age and maturity. I seem different than the other women you have dated because I have seen so much more of life,” she said, channeling her inner Carrie Fisher and being that strong woman she knew she could be. “The truth is, when you are forty, I’ll seem like everyone else.”

He crossed his arms over his chest and tipped his head to the side as if he couldn’t really comprehend what she was saying. “You want me to believe that everything that makes Piper Holloway so special is just age?”

When he put it like that, she admitted to herself, it sounded like an excuse. “You’re being a little overdramatic, but yes.”

“Overdramatic?” he asked. “I’m pretty much known for being the coolest head in the room. I think you’re trying to break up with me and I’m not even sure I know why. We aren’t even serious per your design.”

Piper sighed. This wasn’t going well—she knew better than to start a conversation like this when she was so emotional. She liked Brian. Hell, she might even be starting to fall in love with him, but there was a part of her that knew she wasn’t ready to be her true self with him.
